Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about our courses, training structure, or enrolment process? Find answers to the most common questions about studying with Melbourne Skin Academy.

How long are the courses?

Our course durations vary depending on the treatment and level of training. Courses range from one-day immersive theory and practical courses through to two-day intensive professional training programs.

Each course page outlines the exact duration and structure so you know exactly what to expect before booking.

What is included in the course fee?

Your course fee includes your theory education, demonstrations, practical training where applicable, use of professional equipment and products, training materials and manuals and assessments.

There are no hidden training fees. There are no additional fees for model requirements or products.

What will I learn?

Our courses are designed around real-world skin education, giving you more than a treatment protocol to memorise. We focus on helping you understand the why behind each treatment, so you can make informed decisions and confidently adapt your approach to different clients and skin concerns.

Depending on your chosen course, you’ll develop knowledge and practical skills across skin anatomy and physiology, skin conditions, professional consultation and skin analysis, treatment selection and planning, product and ingredient knowledge, treatment techniques and protocols, contraindications and client safety, treatment parameters, infection control, pre- and post-treatment care, and client education and home-care recommendations.

Our goal is to give you the knowledge, clinical understanding and confidence to take what you learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world.

Is the training theory or practical?

Our courses are structured to give you the right balance of theory and practical training for the treatment you’re learning.

Theory-based courses focus entirely on building your knowledge and clinical understanding, while practical courses combine focused theory, live demonstrations and supervised hands-on training.

The exact theory-to-practical breakdown is outlined on each individual course page.

Do I work on real models?

For all practical courses, yes.

We believe there is a huge difference between practising a treatment in theory and experiencing it on real skin. Our practical training allows students to work on live models under the supervision of an experienced Melbourne Skin clinician, giving you the opportunity to assess real skin, observe real treatment responses and refine your technique.

Will I learn skin consultation and treatment planning?

Absolutely.

We believe great treatment starts before the device or product ever touches the skin.

Our training incorporates professional consultation, skin analysis, treatment suitability, personalised treatment planning and managing client expectations, where relevant to the course.

Do you teach contraindications and treatment safety?

Yes. Safety is a core part of every practical treatment course.

We cover relevant contraindications, precautions, risk management, treatment suitability, infection control, safe equipment handling, adverse responses and appropriate aftercare.

We also teach you when not to treat, which is just as important as knowing how to perform a treatment.

What products and equipment will I train with?

This depends on the course.

Where possible, we train using professional, industry-recognised products, equipment and technologies such as Lira Clinical, Dermal Pen Pro, Candela Max, Cosmelan, Hydrafacial and more, so you gain experience with systems that are relevant to real clinical environments.

For selected courses, you will train directly with the technology used at Melbourne Skin, giving you genuine exposure to professional treatment platforms rather than generic training equipment.

Do I receive a certificate?

Yes. Upon successful completion of the required assessment for your course, you will receive a Melbourne Skin Academy Certificate of Completion.

Assessment requirements vary depending on the course and may include written and/or practical assessment.

Do I need previous experience?

This depends on the course.

Some of our courses are designed for beginners and have no prerequisites, while advanced treatment courses require previous industry experience or completion of our Advanced Skin Science Course.

Each course clearly outlines its prerequisites before you enrol.

I’m already a Dermal Therapist. Is the training still suitable for me?

Absolutely.

Our courses are not designed solely for beginners.

If you’re already working in the dermal or beauty industry, our training can help you deepen your understanding, refine your technique, introduce new treatments and build confidence in advanced treatment planning.

We focus on the why behind the treatment, not just the steps.

What makes Melbourne Skin Academy different?

We don’t teach from a textbook and send you on your way.

Our education is built around real industry experience.

Melbourne Skin Academy was created by Tanya, founder of Melbourne Skin, an established dermal clinic. Our courses are informed by the treatments, clients, challenges and experiences that come with operating a real clinic.

You’ll learn skin science, treatment technique and clinical reasoning, alongside the practical knowledge that comes from working in the industry every day.

Is there support after I complete my course?

We want your education to continue beyond the classroom.

All of our students have access to ongoing guidance and support through our Melbourne Skin Academy educators.

Can I train with my team?

Yes!

We offer group training and private team training options, as well as discounts for groups joining selected scheduled Masterclasses.

Whether you’re looking to upskill your entire team or train alongside industry colleagues, we can tailor the training experience to suit your needs.

Can I book private 1:1 training?

Yes. Private 1:1 training is available across selected courses for students who prefer a more personalised learning experience.

Private training allows us to focus closely on your individual skill level, questions and areas you want to develop.

I’m not sure which course is right for me. Can you help?

Of course.

If you’re unsure where to start, get in touch with our team. We can help you choose a course based on your experience, current qualifications, treatment goals and where you want to take your career or business next. Contact our team to book in a discovery call.

Are your certificates a qualification?

Our courses provide a Melbourne Skin Academy Certificate of Completion confirming that you have successfully completed the relevant training and assessment.

It is important to understand that a Certificate of Completion is not the same as a nationally recognised qualification, VET qualification.

Depending on the treatment, your existing qualifications, professional background and state or territory requirements, you may need additional qualifications, registrations, licences or approvals before offering a treatment professionally.

We always recommend checking the requirements that apply to your individual circumstances, state, location, profession and chosen treatment before commencing practice.

Will I be able to find a job after completing a course?

Our courses are designed to give you practical, industry-relevant skills and knowledge that can strengthen your resume and expand the treatments you can offer.

However, completing a Melbourne Skin Academy course does not guarantee employment.

Employment requirements vary between clinics, salons and employers, and may depend on your existing qualifications, experience, insurance, scope of practice and the specific treatment you have trained in.

Our goal is to give you the knowledge, confidence and practical experience to take the next step in your career.

Can I start my own business straight after completing a course?

Yes, however completing one of our courses does not automatically mean you can immediately open a business or offer the treatment independently.

Before treating clients professionally, you should ensure you have the appropriate business registrations, council or premises requirements, infection-control procedures, equipment requirements, informed consent processes and professional indemnity/public liability insurance in place.

Why should I choose Melbourne Skin Academy if the certificate isn’t a formal qualification?

Because our focus is on real-world, practical industry education.

Our courses are designed to teach you more than a treatment protocol. You’ll learn the science behind the treatment, consultation, skin analysis, contraindications, treatment planning, technique, safety and aftercare — with practical training on applicable courses.

Our aim is to give you the knowledge and confidence to take your next step, whether that’s entering the industry, expanding your current skill set, introducing new treatments or building your own business.
